What's New in 3.0

The newest release of Post.Office from Software.com makes implementing, configuring, and maintaining e-mail systems for corporations, enterprises, and small-to-medium scale ISPs and OSPs easier than ever, thanks to new capabilities, improved performance, and greater capacity. Some of the most prominent new features in Post.Office 3.0 are summarized below.

Full-Featured List Manager Post Office's new List Manager offers quick creation and easy administration of thousands of mailing lists for groups of users who share information on a common topic. Lists are controlled by the mail system administrator, who can delegate responsibility for list management to one or more assigned list owners.
The Post.Office 3.0 List Manager allows list owners to set a wide range of subscription and posting policies, moderate messages, and modify most of the attributes of the list. All list-related operations can be handled through the web interface or through e-mail forms (or a combination of both). Access to the various functions is password protected to prevent unauthorized transactions.

Subscribers can use either a simple web interface or an E-mail interface to review/subscribe to available mailing lists, change delivery modes, and perform search functions.

Greater Capacity Post.Office will now scale to comfortably support over 100,000 mailboxes on a single server with appropriately configured hardware. A new mailbox directory structure eliminates restrictions previously imposed on Post.Office by various operating systems, forcing users with more than 32,000 accounts to link their mailboxes to achieve the desired configuration. The Post.Office 3.0 main mailbox directory contains a hierarchical series of subdirectories within which individual mailboxes are automatically located.

Faster Performance A five-fold increase in message throughput significantly improves the efficiency, performance, and scalability of Post.Office. In addition, Post.Office 3.0 includes a more efficient version of the Post.Office accounts database that significantly reduces the time required to create new mail accounts or access existing ones.

Improved Interface A re-designed and expanded Web forms interface organizes mailbox administration and access into functional units for both the Postmaster and Local users and provides seamless navigation through the many Post.Office features. Access is controlled through a series of Postmaster-configurable security options including passwords, address checking, domain restrictions, and mailing list policies. Forms completion remains a simple fill-in-the-blank operation with help text provided to assist in the proper completion of each field.

Enhanced Windows NT Operation New installation options for Windows NT offer automatic creation of the NT User and Group required to run Post.Office, as well as optional configuration of the NT user rights required for advanced mail server operations.
NT Program Delivery (a mail account option previously available only on UNIX platforms) allows delivery of all mail messages to a program of the user’s choosing. Possible uses include delivery to a program for the archiving of mail messages or re-distribution via some other method (fax, pager, etc.).

Multiple Error Message Handling Held messages may be handled in groups via the Error Message Handler web form or individually via the Held Message web form. By default, both methods of error correction are available for use.

Unknown Address Handling The "wildcard@domain" feature provides control over routing and delivery of all messages addressed to an unknown address within a recognized mail domain.
